Film Review: Win it All

Posted on September 18th, 2019

Win It All might not have been a boom in the industry when it was released, but both moviegoers and film critics positively reviewed it. It’s a Netflix movie that premiered at South by Southwest in 2017 and got released on the popular streaming platform. Directed by Joe Swanberg and starring Jake Johnson, who also co-wrote the screenplay for the movie, Win It All is a charming comedy centered around a casino enthusiast. It came out just about the time when online casino sites started growing in popularity. And finding some legal gambling site reviews would just show how much casino sites have grown in the last few years. Here’s our take on it.

A Pure Comedy in the Classic Sense

Win It All is first and foremost a comedy. Although some serious tones occur in the movie, it’s a traditional comedy by all standards. Taking place around a charismatic yet unlucky player Eddie Garrett, the film revolves around his hobby of playing casino games and his relationships with the people that surround him.

While Eddie Garrett is an experienced player, he is not by any means a good one. He’s impulsive and doesn’t put much thought into his game. But, as the movie progress towards the end, through all of the troubled personal relationships he encounters, he manages to grow and learn the lesson, which helps him come out on top in the end.

Through its hour and a half running time, the movie doesn’t stray away from the classic comedic formula. With that said, there are a few surprising personal moments, mainly between the lead character Eddie and his love interest Eva. Without spoiling the main plot of the movie, we would say that it’s a film full of highly entertaining sequences, instead of a 90-minute story. Sometimes, it even has a bit of an improvisatory feel, but knowing director Swanberg’s style, it seems like this was intentional.

The Cast

Except for Jake Johnson, who plays the leading role of Eddie Garrett in the movie the other notable cast members of Win It All includes:

  • Aislinn Derbez – Eva
  • Joe Lo Truglio – Ron Garrett
  • Keegan-Michael Key – Gene
  • Kris Swanberg – Kris
  • Jose A. Garcia – Michael

As the main character in the movie, Jake Johnson carries out his role pretty good but doesn’t step too much out of his acting comfort zone. The supporting cast gels pretty well together, although there aren’t many memorable moments, except the interactions between Eddie Garrett (Jake Johnson) and the gangster Michael (Jose A. Garcia).

With that said, Keegan-Michael Key is, without a doubt, the funniest and most entertaining part of the movie. He appears in the best scenes in the film and brings energy and humour that we’ve grown to know and like.

Overall Impression of the Movie

To sum up this Win It All review, this movie offers a very entertaining and amusing experience, if you take it for what it is. Although it tries to be more serious at times, the film doesn’t succeed in making you feel like the stakes are that high. Which is probably due to the soundtrack. It doesn’t fit the movie all that well and doesn’t create the urgency and tension at some points when the plot demands it.

With all of this in mind, this is a movie that’s definitely worth the time. Without too many side stories to grab your attention and divert from the main plot. Win It All is a simple and entertaining popcorn flick you should check out in your Netflix library. In the sea of serious casino and gambling movies, it stands out as a delightful and amusing movie centred around this subject. Stay tuned for all of the latest news and upcoming movies.
