Boxes - Workshed's Animated Short Film (In Production)

    Boxes

    Mark Strube EDIT:

    Boxes short film
    640x344 26.9 MB

    Animated by Nathan Matta
    Garbage Band Animation

I've begun work on a short animated film using Maya 6. The film is family-friendly fare about a large box parenting a smaller box through trials such as walking. This will be completed within a month, and I've been racking my brain with it. The models are completed, but I'm working on the image mapping to create a realistic look.

It's coming along, and I should begin animating within a week.

I'll keep you updated on progress...

Here's a test render of a model (with incomplete image mapping).

Nice. Is it a wooden box? It looks thick.
It is not enough 'I succeed'. Everyone else must fail.

Originally I had a smaller model for the box (there's two sizes). I made a larger version from the smaller version and it looked really thick. So I remodeled the larger box to be thinner. It's supposed to be cardboard and will look so (hopefully!) when it is finished.

Maybe if you go for the frayed edges look a little bit, that might help with making it thinner. Something too thin can almost disappear when at the wrong angle. (Disclaimer: I have no idea what I'm talking about when it comes to rendering animation... just thought I'd try and input something. )

I completely finished the film and turned it in to my class today. It was a great final. We had a screening to a small audience of 50, and it got a good response. There'll be a link up to it shortly.

    Thanks, Mark.

Wow, thanks! I've shown the film to a few more people. I noticed that it makes a few girls weepy. It's surprising when a film that you make makes people cry. I've had another film that did that, True Words. It's a really weird feeling because I've been connected to the work for so long that it's really rewarding to see people react to it in positive and emotional ways.

It's an allegory. The big box "gives birth" to the little box and teaches it how to walk.

Boxes just received an Award of Recognition by the Iowa Motion Picture Association.

It's also available now on YouTube. Anyone who would like to leave a comment, make a rating, or the like... I would appreciate it, highly.
