Gas Prices are going up, how about a Song?
Anyway, since Gas Prices have increased since Katrina (I paid $3.30 per gallon today, Houston, TX, USA) I feel that we can now all commiserate via a song:

This is where your and my gas money goes to (MAYBE):

Unbelievable!!
:big grin:
p.s. Yes, I know, we still have the some of the lowest prices in the world here in the U.S., unless you live in Venezuela where is 25 cents per gallon (so I heard)

That's friggin hilarious!!!

That is SO true it's scary,
I paid $3.59 US in New York.
"Suddenly I heard a tapping, as of someone gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door. You heard me rapping, Right?"

Stop complaining and if you want then just buy stock in Halliburton and Exxon and all these other companies. I have and the returns on my share basically pay for my gas, simple as that. That house is absoultely sick. Now we wonder why there are problems in those countries. But you know as always, blame Bush, right?

Lower gas prices is not that much to ask for.
If you think about it, Cost of living always goes up, no argument there,
but, almost a dollar a gallon higher in a couple days?
Come on. That's ridiculous.

If the government really "cared" about the high gas prices they could easily declare a tax holiday on all gas until the price went back down. That would easily knock about a dollar per gallon off the price. But, the government doesn't care... (and they're not supposed to)... New Orleans is proof.

I agree it appears the government doesn't care. But, to say they are not supposed to?
As I say I could be taking your comment out of context.

I agree they're high but there's a couple of things that have to said
1) NY has I think the highest or at least one of the highest taxes on gas in the country so that's a painful surcharge over the current actual price on the NY Mercantile Exchange
2) I don't believe the federal gov't has any say over gas prices. Taxes are a state function and the price itself is simply the price that gasoline trades for on NYMEX and some smaller commodity exchanges. The only thing that Bush can do to affect prices is the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. But keep in mind that the SPR is meant for WAR. He already released some of it but it's not prudent to use our insurance in time of war to lower the price a few cents.
3) The current gas prices are still below those in the 1980s when adjusted for inflation. Moreover back then many gas stations simply did not have any gas at any price. Also the US still has among the lowest gas prices in the world.
Here;s a list of world gasoline prices
Netherlands Amsterdam $6.48
Norway Oslo $6.27
Italy Milan $5.96
Denmark Copenhagen $5.93
Belgium Brussels $5.91
Sweden Stockholm $5.80
United Kingdom London $5.79
Germany Frankfurt $5.57
France Paris $5.54
Portugal Lisbon $5.35
Hungary Budapest $4.94
Luxembourg $4.82
Croatia Zagreb $4.81
Ireland Dublin $4.78
Switzerland Geneva $4.74
Spain Madrid $4.55
Japan Tokyo $4.24
Czech Republic Prague $4.19
Romania Bucharest $4.09
Andorra $4.08
Estonia Tallinn $3.62
Bulgaria Sofia $3.52
Brazil Brasilia $3.12
Cuba Havana $3.03
Taiwan Taipei $2.84
Lebanon Beirut $2.63
South Africa Johannesburg $2.62
Nicaragua Managua $2.61
Panama Panama City $2.19
Russia Moscow $2.10
Puerto Rico San Juan $1.74
Saudi Arabia Riyadh $0.91
Kuwait Kuwait City $0.78
Egypt Cairo $0.65
Nigeria Lagos $0.38
Venezuela Caracas $0.12
Now keep a few things in mind: this is only the price at the pump so $1 in the UK does not hold the same value as $1 in Venezuela. Also some of these countries are MAJOR oil producers which will lower their price.
Actually I would say the govt has been doing a lot, just as one example the $10 billion Energy Bill was passed a few weeks ago that gives incentives to US oil and gas priducers and to alternative energy companies.
Also I think the prices might reach their peak in about 2 weeks, drop slightly but eventually return to those levels. I'm saying this based on the fact that after Ivan prices reached peak about a month after the hurricane.
EDIT: I was right, NY has the highest tax on gas in the country, nearly 34 cents.
Here's a table of taxes by state
