Rumour: Google Want to buy Youtube?
The WSJ reports that Google's in talks to buy up YouTube, most likely to supplement or replace their flailing Google Video. As of now, Google Video lets companies like MTV, the NBA, and Nickelodeon sell videos on their store, whereas YouTube is mostly people uploading last night's South Park episode.
What does this mean to you if it's true? Well, our guess is they're probably going to consolidate the two video sites. Doesn't really make sense to have two sets of developers working on what amounts to the same project. So one of the two is probably going away. As for Google, we'd like to see them work with handset providers and cellular providers so you can get GooTube on your mobile phone. The quality of videos are pretty poor already, so that's great for watching on a 2-inch cellphone screen

Um, AMD buying ATI isn't a rumor. It hasn't happened yet, but it is officially in the works, and just waiting final approval: http://www.amd.com/us-en/Corporate/V...113139,00.html
October 2, 2006 -- Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (NYSE: AMD) and ATI Technologies Inc. (TSX: ATY, NASDAQ: ATYT) today announced that the Fair Trade Commission of Taiwan has cleared the proposed acquisition of ATI by AMD.
The proposed acquisition, announced on July 24, 2006, still remains subject to the approval of ATI shareholders, court approval of the plan of arrangement, approval by the Minister of Industry under the Investment Canada Act and other customary closing conditions. Subject to satisfaction or waiver of these conditions, the transaction is expected to be completed prior to the end of October 2006.
As for the Google-YouTube deal, so far, nobody from Google or YouTube is talking officially, but the Wall Street Journal (who first reported it) is usually fairly reliable about these things.

If that happens, what will happen with the contents of YouTube? YouTube has an option to search adult content video. I believe it will be not eliminated, but I don't know.

Well, it isn't a rumor any more, this is confirmed:

In a joint statement to the press, Google reps said that YouTube will operate independently and preserve its brand identity.

haha, founders must be pretty much celebrating now...1.65B...lolz, I wanna invent something like that too
The first change you will likely see is the ability for YouTube users to charge a fee to watch a specific video. The second thing you will see is lots and lots of corporate content. CBS, Universal Music, Sony Music and Warner Music all signed deals with the new conglomerate to post pay content on the site. CBS will offer "daily short-form" content like perhaps clips from Letterman or sports programming.

st39.6, where did you get your information about YouTube likely to charge a fee? I have read several stories today from a variety of sources, and none of them mentioned anything about a fee to watch the videos.
As for the other part, that came out yesterday before the Google acquisition was official:
In the CBS deal, YouTube gets a wide variety of daily short-form video programming from CBS's news, sports and entertainment divisions. Those units include Showtime Networks Inc. and CBS's cable/digital media service CSTV Networks Inc.
Content would include clips from TV shows "Survivor" and "CSI," short videos from "60 Minutes" and "CBS Evening News with Katie Couric," and promotional clips from Showtime's "Dexter," "Brotherhood," "Sleeper Cell," and the "The L Word."
BMG and Universal would distribute music videos on YouTube. BMG agreed to work with YouTube to develop a process that would allow users to include some BMG content in uploaded videos.

Well, it is now official... AMD now officially owns ATI:
http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1895...EMNL102506EOAD
The acquisition, which was first announced July 24, is seen by industry observers as a way for AMD to strengthen its hand in the chips market and deliver more tightly integrated processors and supporting chip sets.
AMD announced the closing of the deal Oct. 25.
