EWeek just released an article and slideshow called "Linux for Beginners". I thought you might be interested in it.

    Article: http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1895,2102876,00.asp
    Slideshow: http://www.eweek.com/slideshow_viewe...01&po=1,00.asp

To be honest, they make it sound more complicated than it really is, but I thought I would share that with you.

BTW, if there are any questions anyone asked before that I didn't give good enough answers to, let me know and I will be happy to try to fill in the blanks if I can.

    Feisty Fawn is coming:

Ubuntu 7.04 to Arrive April 19
    http://www.linux-watch.com/news/NS3252861445.html

(Feisty Fawn is the nickname of Ubuntu 7.04, I don't know why that wasn't mentioned in the article... btw, the next version of Ubuntu, due in October, is nicknamed "Gusty Gibbon", which follows the tradition started with "Warty Warthog" and followed by "Hoary Hedgehog", "Breezy Badger", "Dapper Drake" and "Edgy Eft")

    Exclamation Ubuntu 7.04

Thanks for the news but... do you know, by chance, where is located the downloadable image for the DVD version of Ubuntu 7.04 installation program? Or the LiveDVD?

I have the Live DVD for the previous version of Ubuntu, 6.10, but it seems that this one don't have DVD version, at least for now.

    Thanks in advance

My guess is the DVD isn't available yet. I would wait a couple of days and check back. Right now, the download servers are probably busy enough without adding DVDs to the mix. But I will keep my eye open and see if I can find anything.

You might also want to keep an eye on this directory. I have a feeling this is where the ISOs will be when they are finally available: http://mirror.mcs.anl.gov/pub/ubuntu...eisty/release/

MaximumPC, a magazine I have subscribed to since Issue #1 back in 1998, had an article in it's last issue called "You can switch to Linux!". It focuses on installing Ubuntu on a computer, so I thought I would link to it for you.

For anyone interested, the next version of Ubuntu will be officially released on Thursday. (Also to be released is Kubuntu, Xubuntu, and Edubuntu.)

This would be version 7.10, aka "Gutsy Gibbon".

I've installed the release candidate for Kubuntu on my computer. It is pretty nice, although other than updated software, I don't see a whole lot of differences, but I haven't had it very long and so I haven't played around with it much.

Ubuntu 8.04 "Hardy Heron" is officially out.

    http://www.ubuntu.com/products/whati...u/804features/

Unlike most releases, Ubuntu 8.04 will be supported for three years on the desktop and five years on the server (most releases are only supported for 18 months after their release, with a new version released every six months). This is the second version of Ubuntu to have "Long Term Support" (the first was in June 2006, which still has more than a year of support left for desktops).

Kubuntu, Edubuntu, Ubuntu Server, and Xubuntu are also all released today. However, I recommend that anyone trying Kubuntu stay away from KDE4. It has some nice desktop effects, but it is lacking in a few areas... areas that I expect will be filled soon. Fortunately, sticking with KDE 3.5 is still very much an option.

    Thanks corfy...

One question... Believe it or not, I still have Ubuntu 6.04 (or 6.10, I don't remember accuratelly now ) on my PC... Tell me, if you know, which steps I need to follow if I want to upgrade to the last Ubuntu... Do I need to download every release LiveDVD, install all one by one, until I reach 8.04, or it can be done on another way?

If you find it appropriate, you can answer me here.

Thank you very much if you can help me or not

The upgrade process depends on which version you have installed right now.

There is no 6.04. There was supposed to be, but it got delayed to 6.06. That release is the only break from the sixth-month release cycle since Ubuntu was started in 2004. However, there is also 6.10, which put it back on it's regular 6-month release cycle.

If you are running 6.06, then you are in luck. There is a direct upgrade process from 6.06 to 8.04 (because they are both considered "Long Term Support" releases). http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/upgr...39afb9b817f197

There is also a direct upgrade from 7.10: http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/upgr...3594b4e7b6f50d

Unfortunately, if you are running 6.10 or 7.04, then the upgrade process is a bit more tedious. Basically, if you are running 6.10, then you have to upgrade first to 7.04. (You can skip that step if you are running 7.04.) Then, you will have to upgrade to 7.10. At that point, you can upgrade to 8.04. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/In...FromOldVersion

BTW, 6.06 is supported until June of next year, but as of this month (not sure of the exact date), 6.10 is no longer supported. Non-LTS releases are only supported for 18 months. That doesn't mean you can't still use it, but you won't get any more updates. So the supported versions are 6.06, 7.04, 7.10, and 8.04.

So, basiclly, what I need to do is to download 7.04, 7.10 and 8.04 LiveDVDs, upgrade them in order and voilá!, I'm ready... Yes?

Important question: I only have 130 MB of free space on my hard disk drive. How much free space would I need to do all the upgrades?

    Thanks a lot corfy.

Unfortunately, I really don't know how much space it will take. Sorry. But it may be easier to backup your files, wipe Ubuntu and reinstall 8.04 than to download all of those DVDs.

Another possibility is to download the CDs for 7.04 and 7.10 and use those to upgrade, and then get the DVD for 8.04. That, at least, would save some download time.

I'm weird... I like to download the lastest version as soon as possible, so that has never been an issue for me. Consequently, I haven't had to deal with that situation personally. Sorry.
