Ashes of Time Redux (Dung che sai duk, dir. Wong Kar-Wai, starring Leslie Cheung)

Quicktime HD domestic trailer from those 'talentless hacks' (Yahoo) (N.B.: may not be true 23.95fps i.e. 'play jerky'. Check for yourself):
    480p (45.6MB) http://playlist.yahoo.com/makeplayli...&sdm=web&pt=rd
    720p (112MB) http://playlist.yahoo.com/makeplayli...&sdm=web&pt=rd
    1080p (160MB) http://playlist.yahoo.com/makeplayli...&sdm=web&pt=rd

Ashes of Time is one of my favourite Wong Kar-Wai films. Originally released in Asia in 1994, it redefinied the martial art genre, created hot debates among polarized audiences and critics - they either loved it for its subversive narrative and techniques, or hated it cos they couldn't understand what's going on. For years it had only been available on Asian DVD with poor picture quality, until director Wong Kar Wai began remastering and reediting the film couple of years ago. This is the result of the effort.

(BTW I've tried working with sex maniac to subtitle, encode and post the original theatrical trailer as an FE. For some reason it never happened.)

That's an understatement, it looked even worse than a 3rd generation VHS copy!

Well, looking at the HD trailer, it seems that the film still looks very coarse and grainy after remastering. I suppose that's just the way it was filmed. (I'm just thrilled to see the late Leslie Cheung in 1080p glory on my brand new 24" monitor.)

But yeah, I agree the old DVD looked appalling. I myself have a copy of the film on Video CD since 98 and have been waiting for a remastered upgrade for 10 years.

I've got this on VCD as well and it was one of those films I watched once and never truly understood so couldn't appreciate it.

This is great news that they are re-releasing it.
