Ten Favorite Westerns
The Western has to be the single most exploited genre in film history and spans several sub-genres. For many students of film making, the "oater" became the basis of film making through six decades and created the profession of "stunt man".
For me the Western was my Saturday baby sitter. We would sit through two to four films for the price of one admission yes, I'm that old].
From my personal collection [which is far from complete} I offer the following:
10 -- Young Guns, Christopher Caine
9 -- The Wild Bunch, Paul Seydor
8 -- Rio Bravo, Howard Hawks
7 -- The Good, the bad and the ugly, Sergio Leone
6 -- The Professionals, Richard Brooks
5 -- Gunfight at the OK Corrall, John Sturges
4 -- The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, John Ford
3 -- The Magnificent Seven, John Sturges
2 -- High Noon, Fred Zinneman
1 -- The Outlaw Jossie Wales, Clint Eastwood

My Listology profile

Westerns are really one of my favorite genres.
It's hard to narrow down my top ten, so I'll pick my favorites from each
decade (there may be two from one decade because I haven't seen many silent westerns)
Stagecoach (1939)
The Searchers (1956)
Rio Bravo (1959)
The Professionals (1960)
Once Upon a Time in the West (1969)
The Outlaw Josey Wales (1976)
Lonesome Dove (1989) (I know this is a mini-series but it is one of the best westerns ever!!)
Dances with Wolves (1990) (I know that a lot of people don't like this movie, but I do)
Unforgiven (1991) - I didn't really care for this one when it first came out, later have come to appreciate it!
Open Range (2003)
I know that I skipped the 40's but am trying to find a non-John Wayne movie from that time period which I liked. Will edit list later when I can recall one!
