    Past Tense

[An earlier version of this PT was originally posted on May 10th, 2012 on JoBlo's "DVD, Blu-Ray & Home Theater Discussion" forum.]

This week we go all Rumspringa on a "Sex Drive"...

The motion picture opened on October 17th, 2008. It was made with a budget of $19,000,000 (estimated) and grossed over $8 million during its U.S. theatrical run. The film opened number nine at the box office, the following week it dropped to number thirteen. Even if you count foreign receipts, it still lost money, this bombed.

The feature opened against "Max Payne", "Eagle Eye", "Quarantine" and "Beverly Hills Chihuahua".

The regular edition (above) came with a cardboard slipcover which is different from the exclusive.

There was no insert or advertisement. There was however a coupon attached to the back of the slipcover. Save $5.00 off select DVDs; "Pineapple Express" (2008), "Nick And Norah's Infinite Playlist" (2008) and "Zack And Miri Make A Porno" (2008). The offer expired on May 24th, 2009. My coupon is still affixed to the rear.

    - - -

Best Buy had the only exclusive, a bonus disc. This streeted on February 24, 2009 for $19.99. The extra DVD was accommodated by a three disc case, not in a CD envelope.

The bonus has a run time of 20:55.

For this promo, the slipcover did not match the wraparound. The slipcover has the rear text "The Funniest, Greatest And Best Unrated DVD Of All Time!" in a different font size from wraparound which is smaller.

    - - - - - - - - - -

    Rant.

We all have movies that we champion. This is one of mine. It didn't have enough advertising, as soon as it hit theaters was pretty much as soon as it left. And it's sad that this bombed sooo bad. Man, I really wanted a sequel with these characters. We are so lucky it got a special home video treatment.

It should be noted that "Beverly Hills Chihuahua" got TWO direct to video sequels - a trilogy! This is the world we live in. Frack!

Okay let me take a step back. This film is loosely based on the novel, "All The Way" by Andy Behrens, published in 2006 by Dutton Juvenile. Yes, a tween book (hard cover) turn into a raunchy sex comedy.

    I did say loosely based.

Before you ask, no I haven't read it.

You know what, I would like to own???

A first pressing, hard cover of "Fast Times At Ridgemont High" (1981). The book, the 1982 movie (and later CBS series [1986]) was based on.

It's expensive. Yes, I know there's a paperback version. I prefer hardbacks, they have a physicality to them - a weight.

    Okay, back on subject...

Gonna guess, most of you don't know what I'm taking about...

"Sex Drive" is about a teen living in Chicago, Ian Lafferty (Josh Zuckerman), an awkward fellow who gets into an online relationship with a girl who offers to have sex with him. He's reluctant to move on the proposal, but his best friend Lance Nesbitt (Clark Duke) convinces to take the chance and to steal his older brother's 1969, mint GTO Judge for the trip there - to impresses the gal, Ms. Tasty (Katrina Bowden).

Curious what this mystery girl might look like, Lance accompanies him for support and giggles. But before things can get into gear, a third person joins their road trip, their other friend, Felicia Alpine (Amanda Crew). She is oblivious to the real reason behind the voyage to Knoxville, Tennessee.

Various misadventures happen; detours include a run in with the Amish and the Abstinence Xtreme Dancers (such an awesome concept), angry rednecks (Lance's fault), a prison fight - all the while being chased by a mysterious car and Ian's bullying brother, Rex (James Marsden) in pursuit.

Things as expected don't go as planned, but it becomes a growth for all three; making this a coming-of-age movie. And it has a happy ending. *smiles*

    - - -

The biggest problem this film had to surmount was 'taste'. This is a middle of the road kind of movie.

It's kinda vulgar which bothered viewers who didn't want to see that and those who thought they were cheated because it WASN'T explicit enough. Yeah. You can't win here. This wasn't made for them.

The other problem involved the character of Lance. Why does this chubby kid get all the ladies? It broke the illusion for some people. There's a reason for that, two words - 'charisma' and 'confidence'. They guy has barrels full of both. And the balls to go that extra mile most won't. He can impress; pretty much answers that.

This was a blind purchase, my only exposure to this was the online trailer.

I found the movie to be funny, hilarious in places and with heart. I cared. A great combination. Mary (Alice Greczyn), the Amish girl was so sweet.

Let me make something clear; don't be gross for the sake of being gross. And sadly for some that is a must. Gross does not equal funny, nor should it ever! Be creative, not lazy.

This was the second time I saw actress Amanda Crew, the first was "Final Destination 3" (2006) as Julie Christensen, the younger sister to our heroine. Here she doesn't have a supporting role, she's one of the main characters. Crew... very easy on the eyes.

    - - -

One of the extras I enjoyed (beyond the unrated cut) was Dave Sheridan (the baddie, 'Bobby Jo') dressed as Randy "Macho Man" Savage at the hotel the cast was staying at. He's banging on doors and ends up in Crew's room. It was funny. And he does an excellent impersonation.

The Unrated version consist of outtakes and digitally inserted nudity. It's meant to be a parody of unrated releases, I liked it. For some, the satire went over their heads. It's suppose to look off and a bit disjointed. Just enjoy it, twenty minutes of madness.

Yeah, the United Kingdom DVD cover needed to get sober or at least more inebriated. I'm glad the US wraparound was nicer. *nods* Okay, perhaps I'm in the minority, but I did NOT like "Superbad" (2007). Minus McLovin' and his cop pals, I disliked everyone else; didn't laugh once.

I do not feel that it should be compared to "Sex Drive".

Yeah, this is one of the shorter entries, but still informative and a delight - like a visit to Grandma's.

Sway. Our next Past Tense fights evil where it exists in Hot Topic bought costumes on May 26th, 2016.

[An earlier version of this PT was originally posted on May 24th, 2012 on JoBlo's "DVD, Blu-Ray & Home Theater Discussion" forum.]

This week we stalk the streets of New Gotham in a bustier and trench coat in "Birds Of Prey"...

"Birds Of Prey: The Complete Series" was released on home video on July 15th, 2008.

It streeted against "The Bank Job: 2 Disc Special Edition", "Dallas: The Complete Ninth Season" and "Meet Bill".

This release originally came with an embossed cardboard foil slipcover which mirrored the case's wraparound. It also came with a four page booklet, an episode guide.

    - - -

There was a single exclusive from Best Buy, a twenty-two page mini comic. This set sold for $29.99. The comic came inside the case.

The self-contained tale is a reprint of issue #68, "One Day, Well-Chosen". Their secret identities start to take their toll - bickering. Barbara Gordon consults her father, the former police commissioner for ideas. He recommends that she give them a nudge to create a life outside their alter egos...

"A cop's life is huge stretches of boredom punctuated my moments of sheer terror. Cops are eight times more likely to die from suicide than from homicide. Even for the adrenaline junkies, I suspect sometimes the real world becomes scarier than the job. If you really want to help your friends find some way to remind them that they have to build a life outside of the uniform."

Barbara arranges for a sparring match between Wonder Woman (in street clothes) and Dinah Lance (Black Canary). Diana Prince is someone who has managed to keep both her work and home life in balance (mostly).

Helena Kyle goes on a date with an admirer as Huntress. She gives Josh a tour of her life, hoping to scare him into quitting, it backfires. She ends up sleeping with him with her mask on.

Barbara then gives Dinah an outlet, a vacant store - a future floral shop. Lastly she gives Helena something to normalize her. Her dream job, before become a super hero - a teaching gig. The comic was released by DC; written by Gail Simone with pencil by Joe Bennett.

    - - - - - - - - - -

    Rant.

    *sigh*

This could've been better. It's okay, just above filler... just. They went the easy route, the stories were mundane and could see where it will end. There was no real drama or challenge. Point A to B to C, the end. Basic teleplay 101 writing. It works, but that doesn't make it great - just passable.

My other issue is with the costume. The main character, Huntress was so stupid. What do you see above? Yes, actress Ashley Scott is hot, no denying that. But that's not it. Face. You can see her face!!!

How can there be a private life if everybody knows what you look like? You keep that a secret. Second, how is that any kind of costume? It's like her character, Helena Kyle got her outfit from Hot Topic - on a mix and match sale. I know these folks don't have a Bruce Wayne kind of greenbacks, but c'mon.

The other problem was with the super powers itself. Helena is a Meta-Human. What does that mean? They really didn't go into it. More than human... there you go. NO!

You give some kind of back story to explain, not a courtesy, but a plot point. She is the daughter of Catwoman (who was Meta) and Batman. So she has fast reflexes and probably purrs if you stroke her nicely, probably.

Let me take a stop back - most didn't see this which is why it got canceled. About?

Set some years beyond the work of Batman, we follow a group of female crime fighters; Helena, former Batgirl - now crippled Barbara Gordon (Dina Meyer), reborn as Oracle and a new recruit, a runaway, Dinah Lance (Rachel Skarsten).

She's the daughter of Black Canary. Dinah's powers are telepathy and telekinesis. She doesn't have a costume.

Their main foe, unknown to them is psychologist, Dr. Harleen Quinzel (Mia Sara), Helena's shrink. She is in fact, Harley Quinn - the Joker's former girlfriend and partner in crime.

    As expected, she wants revenge.

So where's Batman? You guess is as good as mine. He's a no-show. Back story, a henchman of the Joker kills Catwoman. She's been living in secret with a child, unknown to Bruce. Trying to stop the clown faced man, Batgirl is shot in the back, making her a paraplegic.

Enraged, Batman hunts down the Joker, not with the intent of putting him away. The Caped Crusader wants him dead, which he does.

Stricken with grief, the Dark Knight retires and leaves Gotham. That's the setup, pretty decent. Too bad the rest of the series didn't live up to the promise.

So? How is New Gotham different from Gotham? *shrugs* More brooding?

I will say this, it was nice to have the Joker (in flashback) voiced by Mark Hamill. He did the voice for the villain through out the show, "Batman: The Animated Series". Well, that and I'm glad they were given the rare opportunity to finish off this series. The final episode gives closure.

There is one other point to make - music.

The main theme was this great song by Aimee Allen, "Revolution". It's been replaced for home video with a generic piece. Can you at least substitute it with something equal or near that level? The song used in the final episode was also axed. "All the Things She Said" by t.A.T.u.. Let it be known - not teen Russian lesbians. Well, they are Russian.

Man, Allen keeps getting screwed. She did an album, that is held by the record company. They didn't feel it was right for release, which is a common occurrence. A limited number promo CD was given out, but never an official album. Since they own the rights, to this day that CD remains unreleased. Allen made an attempt to get it back, but it failed. I have that promo music. Great songs. She could've been the next big thing, not kidding.

Allen did get an album out, but it's a 180 degree departure from her first effort. I guess she wanted to distance herself from her locked work. The same thing happened to a group you probably never head of Vixtrola. They did not recover. A shame. Great tunes.

Now if you're wondering, 'hey that Birds Of Prey poster looks very familiar' you would be right, it does.

Almost identical to the poster for the first "Underworld" (2003). Did "Underworld" copy the series? The show debuted on October 9th, 2002. "Underworld" came out on September 19th, 2003. Interesting.

    - - -

Granted the show only had thirteen episodes, I had hoped for more/better extras. It was nice to see the unaired pilot which had Sherilyn Fenn in the Mia Sara role. That's the only extra related to the show. No commentary or featurettes or the TV promo ad (find it on YouTube).

I am glad that they put the entire flash-animated series, "Gotham Girls"; the other DVD extra. They're cute shorts and an extension of the "Batman: The Animated Series" universe - which I love. But what does this have to do with "Birds Of Prey"?

Don't understand why this was included here, but do appreciate it.

    - - - - - - - - - -

    Tangent.

Since this was talked about a moment ago, "Underworld".

Star Ace in September of this year will be releasing a Selene action figure from "Underworld Evolution" (2006). Amazing details, looks like actress Kate Beckinsale.

It is 1/6 scale; roughly 11.5 inches tall with over thirty points of articulation. The figure comes with various interchangeable hands and seventeen gear and weapon accessories, plus a stand.

Man, I would love to own this. One problem, this was created for rich fanboys - the price is $234.99.

    - - - - - - - - - -

    Just Because.

Most folks (myself included) got their first look at Ashley Scott as an android, the mecha prostitute - Gigolo Jane from "A.I.: Artificial Intelligence" (2001). She had at best, a cameo; ten seconds would be saying too much.

The above pix also shows Jude Law as Gigolo Joe. Anyhow back to Jane, I wonder if that region *points down* vibrates? Don't give me that look - you're thinking the same thing. Hey, that fem-bot needs some servicing, her boobs appear to point in different directions.

    There you have it. *harumpf*

Be back here on June 9th, 2016 for a global reboot, the religious kind.

[An earlier version of this PT was originally posted on June 7th, 2012 on JoBlo's "DVD, Blu-Ray & Home Theater Discussion" forum.]

This week we fight angels with assault weapons (don't give me that look) in "Legion"...

The motion picture opened on January 22nd, 2010. It was made with a budget of $26,000,000 (estimated) and grossed over $40 million during its U.S. theatrical run. The film opened number two at the box office, the following week it dropped to number six.

The feature opened against "Avatar", "The Book Of Eli", "Sherlock Holmes" and "Alvin And The Chipmunks: The Squeakquel".

This release did not come with a slipcover, nor insert.

    - - -

There was a single exclusive from Blockbuster (some stores still exist), a bonus disc. It was packed in a cardboard sleeve, approximately the same size as the DVD case.

The rear sleeve somewhat mirrored the back of the case.

The main difference is the notice that this release include exclusive content.

The set streeted on May 11th, 2010 and sold for $19.99.

Man, I was lucky to get my copy. So glad I was able to go in the morning. Most of the Blockbusters had closed in my area at that time, now all but a memory. I had to go the next town to find a store.

When I got there, there was only two copies. I bet most people didn't even know it existed.

The bonus DVD has a run time is 26:58 minutes.

Correction, there was a second... not so much.

Best Buy; if you purchased "Legion" with "Daybreakers" DVD or Blu-Ray; must be on the same receipt. You would've gotten a free $5.00 store gift card.

    - - -

Okay let me take a step back. I can see most in the dark, it didn't have a wide audience. So I'll recap...

"Paradise Falls" is a desert diner in the middle of nowhere for truckers and travelers, it becomes the central point for the human race. God has become tired of us, we've deviated from his plan. Let me quote a different movie, "Dance Of The Dead" (2008). The Kyle Grubbin character...

End of the world. God's flushing the toilet. His way of saying, 'Y'all couldn't work it out, so, adios.'

The son of the owner, Jeep Hanson (Lucas Black) is in love with a pregnant girl, Charlie (Adrianne Palicki, above). The kid isn't his, in fact she doesn't know who the father is - she's a loose gal.

And she's not looking for a husband OR a serious boyfriend.

They're friends and Charlie wants to keep it that way. Soon the staff and customers are attacked by an elder woman trying to murder the girl. She is kill by a shotgun by the cook (Charles S. Dutton), the old woman was not human.

Things speed up when a stranger arrives in a stolen police car full of guns and ammo. He tells them he's the Archangel Michael (Paul Bettany) and has taken upon himself to save humanity.

There is an angel army heading for the diner lead by Gabriel (Kevin Durand). Why?

To assassinate Charlie before she gives birth; her unborn child is the savior.

When God planned this second cleansing (The Flood was the first), He/She left a loophole; can we band together for a greater cause, put asides our differences... sacrifice.

Worldwide things are grim, this angelic war is happening everywhere. We get a glimpse at the start that this situation is global. I wish there was more of this. A better idea of how bad the rest of the planet has it.

Another problem I have is it feels rushed. I wanted more time with our characters coming to grips at the magnitude of their dire situation, not everyone is getting out alive. Plus the 100% reality that God and Angels do exist - wanting our extermination.

And that's where I'll stop. You get the idea. The film has some good moments, I enjoyed it. It's part of my library. It's a popcorn flick, an entertaining one. It is what it is. *nods*

Another quote, this one from Michael...

When God chose your kind as the object of His love, I was the first in all of heaven to bow down before you. My love, my hope for mankind was no less than His. But I have watched you trample that gift. I have watched you kill each other over race and greed... waging war over dust and rubble and the words in old books. And yet, in the midst of all this darkness, I see some people who will not be bowed. I see some people who will not give up, even when they know all hope is lost. Some people, who realize being lost is so close to being found. I see you, Jeep. Fifteen years old, your mother leaves. Your father withdraws from the world and you spend the next five years of your young life helping him find his way home. You love a woman who bears the child of another and you love her with no thought of yourself, even though you know she may never love you the way you love her.

You, Jeep... you are the reason I still have faith.
    Sway.

    - - - - - - - - - -

    Footnotes.

Something I was not aware at the time of watching, but Lucas Black played the creepy kid in the former CBS series, "American Gothic" (1995) - Caleb Temple.

    Someone at the door.

In December of 2009 there was a motion comic prequel. The thing had no dialog, text only on the talk bubbles. But it did have Paul Bettany doing the voiceover. That's not on the DVD nor BD releases. It was available from iTunes at the time for free.

The movie which was a somewhat, a sleeper hit - was transformed into a series for the SyFy Channel by the movie's co-writer and director, Scott Charles Stewart. David Lancaster and Michael Litvak who were also producers on the film carried over as executive producers.

"Dominion" debuted on June 19th, 2014. You gotta admit, that's a cool series poster.

The series jumps twenty-five years into the future with an adult savior. Filming occurred in Cape Town, South Africa.

Tom Wisdom plays Michael, Langley Kirkwood as Jeep and Carl Beukes as Gabriel.

The cast includes Roxanne McKee, Christopher Egan, Alan Dale and Anthony Stewart Head.

It lasted two seasons with twenty-one episodes. The show has gotten mixed reviews which probably contributed to its cancellation. Too bad none of the original actors reprised their roles - especially Durand.

And there you have it. One of my shorter entries.

Come back here on June 23rd, 2016 for a docudrama based on TV and cinema icon which is the first 100% brand new entry (not repurposed) for this web locale.
