the new and final WTC plan

    http://www.reuters.com/newsArticle.j...toryID=2295143

A towering spire that would be among the world's tallest structures was selected on February 26, 2003 to restore New York's skyline where the World Trade Center once stood, an official source familiar with the decision said. The source said New York officials had chosen a design concept plan by renowned German-based architect Daniel Libeskind ahead of the other finalist team of New York architects led by Rafael Vinoly and Frederic Schwartz.
"It's Libeskind. Both parties have been notified," said the source, who asked not to be identified, after meetings on Wednesday of the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation, a state, city and civic agency established to oversee the development of the 16-acre site.

A news conference was scheduled for Thursday at 11 a.m. EST for the corporation to make the official announcement.

The plan by Libeskind, who designed the Jewish Museum in Berlin, calls for a tower 1,776 feet high -- symbolizing the year of U.S. independence -- topped with a garden-filled spire.

The plan would use an excavated pit enveloped by the original twin towers' foundation walls as a memorial to the 2,800 people killed Sept. 11, 2001 when the World Trade Center was attacked and destroyed by hijacked airliners.

Officials have said a memorial to the victims of the attacks would be incorporated into the final plan. There is still expected to be more debate and refinement of the plan, and officials have estimated construction will begin in 2005 at the earliest.
