'Matrix' 2 - $93 Million in First Weekend

    http://movies.yahoo.com/movies/featu...oxofficer.html

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Following a record opening day take on Thursday, the sci-fi thriller "The Matrix Reloaded" sold an additional $93.3 million worth of tickets in its first weekend of release across North America -- the No. 2 weekend gross of all time behind "Spider-Man," according to studio estimates issued on Sunday.

"Spider-Man" opened with $115 million in 2002. The previous No. 2 weekend box office slot was held by 2001's "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" with $90.3 million.

While most movies open on a Friday in North America, "The Matrix Reloaded" opened on Thursday, preceded by late screenings on Wednesday. Its distributor, Warner Bros. Pictures., lumped in Wednesday receipts -- estimated by industry observers at about $5 million -- with the Thursday haul of $42.5 million, bringing the film's cumulative gross to an estimated total of $135,768,000 for it's first four days in release.

The sequel to the groundbreaking 1999 film "The Matrix" stars Keanu Reeves as a resistance fighter who battles an army of machines that seek to take control of the last human city. It will be followed in November by a third movie, "The Matrix Revolutions." All three films were written and directed by Larry and Andy Wachowski.

Warner Bros., a unit of AOL Time Warner Inc. produced the films with Village Roadshow Pictures, a unit of Australia's Village Roadshow Ltd. The second and third movies were reportedly budgeted at about $175 million each.

That *IS* a lot of money.

They really know what they're doing - third film gonna be just as good money wise?
Heck - I know someone who saw it this weekend without ever seeing the first (They said it was "confusing" but they had no idea what it was about )

Box Office Mojo comes through with the word that Reloaded has overshot Spider-Man's 4-day take from a year ago:

'The Matrix Reloaded's estimated $135.9 million 4-day haul eclipsed 'Spider-Man's $125.9 million record. "We were well into the 80% range for 'want-to-see' and in the 70% range for 'definite recommend' across the board," Warner Bros.' executive VP and general sales manager of domestic distribution Jeff Goldstein told Box Office Mojo of the audience reaction. "It's exactly what you want to see for a movie like this."

Among its several records, the cyber-sequel set a new benchmark for an R-rated just like another "man vs. machine" movie 'Terminator 2' did 12 years ago as history repeats itself...
    thats f*** awsome...
    Neo kicks Spider ***....

wow, I guess maybe the second Spider-Man movie will try to compete with Reloaded.
If you can stay calm, while all around you is chaos...then you probably haven't completely understood the seriousness of the situation.

Whats all this hype about being a R rated movie? Anyone under 17 can still get in a R rated... just they have to be with someone whole is over 17.
