    Chick Flicks vs.
    Macho Movies
    Can You Tell The Difference?

    by: Kathy Shaskan

    The Chick Flick:
The main relationship is between a man and woman

    The Macho Movie:
The main relationship is between a man and his sworn enemy (or sometimes his sub-machine gun and/or sports car).

    The Chick Flick:
There are lots of close-ups so you can see every emotion on the character’s face.

    The Macho Movie:
There are lots of long shots so you can see every bit of blood, bone and grey matter that explodes from the character’s face.

    The Chick Flick:
The villains are people you see everyday, like cheating husbands and nasty bosses.

    The Macho Movie:
The villians are people you’ll probably never see in a lifetime, like heads of cocaine cartels and man-eating aliens.

    The Chick Flick:
The villain’s worst act is something awful like sleeping with her best friend’spouse.

    The Macho Movie:
The villain’s worst act is something awful like stealing a nuclear weapon.

    The Chick Flick:
A chick flick always includes child actors so they can add humanity and warmth to the story.

    The Macho Movie:
A macho movie includes child actors so they can be kidnapped and add suspense to the story.

    The Chick Flick:
The characters learn to respect one another through long talks and thoughful actions.

    The Macho Movie:
The characters learn to respect one another by beating each other up.

    The Chick Flick:
If someone gets a disease, it's inevitably cancer or heart failure.

    The Macho Movie:
If someone gets a disease, it's inevitably a rare form of radiation poisoning or an exotic parasitic infection picked up in space.

    The Chick Flick:
There will be at least one emotional death

    The Macho Movie:
There will be at least 20 unemotional deaths

    The Chick Flick:
There will be at least one grunting, gooey depiction of childbirth.

    The Macho Movie:
There will be at least one grunting, gooey scene of hand-to-hand combat.

    The Chick Flick:
The chick flick will feature at least one scene where the lead character interacts with her mother.

    The Macho Movie:
The macho movie will feature at least one scene where the lead character interacts with a digital readout counting down to zero.

    The Chick Flick:
The climactic scene involves an explosion of passion.

    The Macho Movie:
The climactic scene involves an explosion of a car, bridge or other man-made structure.

    The Chick Flick:
A happy ending is when the lead character finds love.

    The Macho Movie:
A happy ending is when the lead character finds the villain and blows him to smithereens.

I actually thought that How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days was a pretty good chick flick. It gave me some good laughs.

In my mind, a "chick flick" is usually a romantic comedy. With that concept, I like chick flicks as long as they are more comedic than romantic.

Two of my favorites are "American President" and "Mannequin."

"Titanic" is pretty high on the list, too, although it isn't a comedy.

Does "The Princess Bride" count as a chick flick? I count that among my favorites as well.

I liked Dirty Dancing for the music (I listen to the soundtracks more than my wife does).

I'm sure there are others, but I can't think of any right now.

I think a good chick flick is Showgirls. If you think about it, it kind of is a chick flick because it's about an independent woman making it on her own.
