    Sony attempting to buy MGM

    From www.comingsoon.net:
Sony, which owns Sony Pictures (Columbia, Screen Gems, Sony Classics) is in advanced talks to buy MGM with two buyout firms in a deal that could be worth close to $5 billion.
The buyout firms, which include Texas Pacific Group and Providence Equity Partners, are in discussions with billionaire financier Kirk Kerkorian to buy his stake of more than 70 percent in MGM. Current talks involve the three partners splitting a $1.5 billion cash payment and borrowing the rest to finance the deal.

The interest in MGM is obvious: the company's enormous library of films and film rights. Between MGM and United Artists, the company is sitting on a library of more than 1,450 motion pictures, including many film classics and the James Bond series.

Plus, MGM owns the Orion/Goldwyn library with 2,200 titles and recently acquired PolyGram's catalog of more than 1,300 films. In terms of opening the vaults and reissuing films on DVD, MGM is at the head of the pack, considering how many titles come here every week.

So in fact it's MGM/UA/Orion/Goldwyn/Polygram that they're bettting for. Large stake and who's gonna take the gamble?

Yeah, it does seem like Sony Pictures Classics is quite wildly forgotten.

True, but Sony Pictures Classics simply buys films for distribution in different regions and on DVD. They don't produce films.
