    JOB DESCRIPTIONS:

    Corporate Administration - New Technology/Media
    Title: Encoding QC Engineer US-CA-Burbank

    THE SITUATION:
    The Encoding QC Engineer position is located in Burbank, California and resides within the Buena Vista Datacasting business unit; part of The Walt Disney Company. Buena Vista Datacasting has just launched MovieBeam, a video-on-demand movie rental service transmitted via digital wireless signal to an electronic receiver.

    THE POSITION:
    Reporting to the Manager, Video Operations and Production, this position will be primarily responsible for the daily operational encoding of digital media content for Buena Vista Datacasting and the pre-QC of all incoming movie audio/video physical tape assets. Other responsibilities include communications and status on re-ordering of non-approved assets, handling the weekly coordination of status and preparation of physical assets into digital assets from encoding team to programming team, preparing edited trailers to video layoff for dubbing/shipping to studios for approval, preparing and QCing audio leveling on all trailers and promos, coordination of all AC3 5.1 Surround assets, supporting potential graphics production requests and possibly taking on set top box QC steps, such as pushing content weekly to STB's and providing Close Captioning & Metadata QC and status. Other Encoding Engineer responsibilities include editing, noise reduction and scaling of film/video sources, databasing of metadata, writing and carrying out video quality plans, scripting command-line applications, tracking order status, providing progress reports, coordinating content delivery with IT personnel, notifying lab manager of technical issues, and reprocessing content when quality fails.

    THE IDEAL CANDIDATE:
    Qualified candidates must have an explicit attention to detail, effective communication skills, the ability to work with tools such as Flash, Premiere, Photoshop, and other graphics or video applications and must have a combined background experience or knowledge in the following areas: OS: Windows 2000 or NT, scripting, video compression formats for broadcast and digital media platforms such as: JPEG, MPEG, H.261, DV, and other video compression and decompression techniques; video editing hardware and software, DVD-mastering applications, digital video filtering and scaling; scan rate conversion, gen-locking; de-interlacing and color space conversion; encoding and decoding of television standards such as NTSC, PAL and HDTV; ftp applications, database applications, video compression quality test plans, scheduling, and color parameter adjustment such as hue and saturation. Close-captioning knowledge is key. The candidate must also be able to work in a high-demand workflow environment, be highly detailed oriented and have a varied knowledge of video processes from capture to compression, will understand digital and television video formats and have a discriminating eye for video quality.
