French and foreign films worth checking out.

Ok, we have had a few come up recently that gave me the idea for this thread.

J7 brought up Nid de guêpes (The Nest, 2002) that was very similar to Assault on Precinct 13,only better!

I came across the series of Taxi movies which everyone has said they enjoyed.

Also Brotherhood of the wolf was mentioned. Loved it!

I found Vidocq at Netflix listed as Dark Portals: The Chronicles of Vidocq, added it to my queue.

There was also Le femme Nikita.

    Anything else worth mentioning?

    Some more

Dobermann (1997 Vincent Cassel, Monica Bellucci)

It's been a while since I've seen it but I remember it being quite off the wall and interesting.

    IMDB Link

    La Haine (1995 Vincent Cassel)

One of the best French Films I've seen. My UK version of the DVD has really awful subtitles though. White Subtitles on a black and white film

    IMDB Link

    Roberto Succo (2001 Stefano Cassetti)

Worth seeing if you can find it.

I think Leon aka Professional with Portman was French too, wasnt it?
Everythin by Luc Besson is worth mentioning imo
Also, French have famous comedies. Try to find anything with Louis de Funès. And Jean-Paul Belmondo of course.

I saw Run Lola Run some time back. I agree ,that was good.

District B13 was wild! Great action movie!

A few days ago I watched Dark Portals: The Chronicles of Vidocq. Very nice who-dun-it type movie while finding out the identity of the masked character.

Jean Pierre Jeunet movies are pretty good but not for everyone. Off course everyone should see "Le Fabuleux Destin D'Amelie Poulain", but movies such as "La Cité Des Enfants Perdus" and "Delicatessen" could be compared with a Terry Gilliam movie.

Here is the IMDB link, the synopsys is pretty good, and Jean Reno plays an excellent role. Agreed the movie looses quite a bit in the translation, but it is definitely a need to see.
It's a mix of modern day Sherlock Holmes, with some Kolchak type storyline, but with a religious/sect undertone in the old France settings, or at least that is what the movie would like you to believe.

There is action, but what makes the movie is simply the way the story unfolds, and just keeps you guessing to the end. As a thriller/mystery/detective story, this is one of the best.

Here is another link to Virgin which has a good synopsys and trailer to boot.

The sequel Crimson Rivers 2: Angels Of The Apocalypse, which I also find great, but as with most sequels, not equivalent to the first, but an excellent story as well. Some great SFX with modern day gadgets.

I can't see through walls, but I can kick your ass.

    The Red Balloon

The late French filmmaker Albert Lamorisse made this classic, 1956 short work about a lonely little Parisian boy (Pascal Lamorisse) befriended by a large red balloon, which seems to have a will of its own. As with his preceding short, 1952's White Mane, Lamorisse took home a grand prize from the Cannes Film Festival for The Red Balloon, and the latter film also won an Academy Award. There have been some stimulating pieces of film criticism (some pro, some con) written about the aesthetics of this little movie over the years, but there's no question it makes for a touching, allegorical piece always certain to prompt conversations among viewers of any age.
