Why voting matters in a democracy: Lessons from the US Minnesota Senate Race
For those living in democratic countries, many wonder if voting actually can make a difference. Here's a lesson that it can: The election of the United States senator from the state of Minnesota.
The race for the senate seat was between Norm Colman and Al Franken (yes the comedian, author, and occasional movie star). On November 18 election officals certified the final results:
Total Votes: 2,885,555
Norm Colman (sitting senator): 1,211,590
Al Franken: 1,211,375
Other Candidates: 462590
Difference between top candidates: 215 Votes!
-------------------------------------------------
With nearly 2.9 million votes cast, the difference between the top two candidates was only 0.0075%. Under Minnesota election law, a recount is mandated if the difference between the top candidates is less the one half of 1%. A recount is underway with each side challenging votes. After processing to date (12/30), Al Franken now leads the race with just a mere 50 VOTES!
Remember -- your vote matters ALWAYS!!!!!
