Past Tense - Teeth Part II

    Footnotes.

Not enough know, but there was a direct to video prequel, an animated short - "Van Helsing: The London Assignment". This streeted on May 11th, 2004 for $14.98. Four days after the movie premiered in theaters.

The story deals with Jack The Ripper and Mr. Hyde. I won't spoil it, sway.

Bought mine from Walmart on release day for $9.44, why yes, I am that anal.

It featured Hugh Jackman, David Wenham, Robbie Coltrane and Alun Armstrong reprising their roles, voices. It's run time is thirty-three minutes. And is pretty decent.

Do wish there were more made. But sadly that was a one time deal.

There was at one point, for a short time - a proposal for a spin-off television series.

The show was for NBC and would've been called "Transylvania". A cowboy sheriff from America comes to Europe and encounters monsters and the supernatural. The one of the ideas was to have Hugh Jackman reprise his role of Gabriel Van Helsing for guest appearance(s).

The producers came up with the idea because of the various sets which were built; detailed, not simple fronts, but huge three dimensional structures.

One day we were just sitting on the set, which Allan Cameron [production designer] had built this fantastic village for, and I'm like, 'I'd hate to tear this down. I mean, it's so fantastic, and I'd hate to bulldoze it. We ought to do something with it. Let's do a television show!' And that's when my wheels started spinning.
    - Stephen Sommers

It takes place in the late 1800s, like Van Helsing, and it takes place in Transylvania. But none of the characters intersect. It's actually a new idea that just takes place in the world [of the film].
    - producer Bob Ducsay

But the project fell apart soon after the film's release; the weekend box office was not as high as Universal expected. And it killed the proposed sequel, TV series and any further animated adventures. Plus the math didn't add up: the price of make-up, special effects and shooting in Romania turned out to be cost prohibited.

So the question is - how much pre-production was done? Don't know, but I would love to see that artwork.

This wasn't the first time NBC was looking at the concept. In 1997 the network had a pilot made called "The Van Helsing Chronicles". I know there was some problems and a re-shoot happened, but not much else.

This never aired. It starred Dan Gauthier as Christian Van Helsing and Teri Polo as Helena Harker. The teleplay was written by Javier Grillo-Marxuach who would later go on to be a supervising producer on ABC's "Lost" (2004).

    - - -

There was a beastie that was left out. Cut out from the script stage, the Gill-Man from "Creature From The Black Lagoon" (1954). It was suppose to have been in the moat around Dracula's castle in Rome. Seen when the Frankenstein monster is abducted. But budget for such a cameo wasn't possible. The missing-link fish would have made an appearance in the sequel.

    - - -

Something I had long forgotten, the other adventure. Published by Dark Horse Comics in 2004 was a one shot; a side story.

"Van Helsing: From Beneath The Rue Morgue" take place right after he dispatches Mr. Hyde (voiced by Robbie Coltrane). Running from the French authorities in the sewers, he hears a scream. Investigating the source and he finds himself being hunted by an invisible menace.

Later Van Helsing discovers a secret underground laboratory, which has made this abomination from the parts of man and beast. This thing that was hunting in France was given invisibility by a test serum.

The lab belongs to none other than Dr. Moreau. Who has been playing with his chimeras notions with the poor and homeless of Paris. Moreau unleashes Beathán, the creature on him and during the chaos, escapes. Angry over his losses, decided that he needs a more controlled environment, like an island - perhaps somewhere in the South Seas.

I need to pick this up along with the making-of book, "Van Helsing: The Making Of A Legend", published by Newmarket Press on May 20th, 2004; 160 pages.

It's on my radar, I just need to do it.

    Something.

When I saw this last week - a thought immediately popped.

The feminine costume is called "Blast Off Astronaut". It reminds me of the space suits worn by the ill fated crew of the long range space probe, the Icarus from "Planet Of The Apes" (1968).

Not good replica, but close enough. That Halloween costume could be modified to be a sexy version of the ANSA suit, an accessory could be a plush chimp or gorilla.

    It would work.

Sure, left to right; science officer Lt. Thomas Dodge (Jeff Burton), C.O. Col. George Taylor (Charlton Heston), biologist Lt. Maryann Stewart (Dianne Stanley) and navigator Lt. John Landon (Robert Gunner).

    - - - - - - - - - -

    Just Because.

There she is; "Miss America" in me.
    - Vivien Glass

    Do you need to ask?

Kate Beckinsale as Anna Valerious in her ballroom dress.

She was nominated for a 2005 Razzie Award for Worst Actress (for this movie). It didn't happen, I'm glad.

And yes, folks moaned about her too! Anna was too similar to Selene from "Underworld" (2003). *shakes head*

By the way, a fifth feature is on the way for 2016, "Underworld: Next Generation"; Beckinsale will reprise her role as will Theo James from "Underworld: Awakening" (2012). Hope they get Scott Speedman too.

More titles to ponder watching this Halloween.

    "Alien Raiders" (2008)
Buck Lake, Arizona; the local grocery store is closing its doors for the night. The remaining customers are told to bring their merchandise to the check out. Shortly later a group of paramilitary enter the store and holds everyone hostage. Terrorists? Army? Thieves? No, none of the above, they're scientists, looking for what they believe is the source of a secret alien invasion. Its leader is in the market - inside one of the staff or customers. A gory and paranoid feature with a twist ending. A great little film. And yes, everybody complains about the tacky title. Filmmakers didn’t do it, the distributor did.
    Warner Home Video - 2009 - R

    "Bait" (2012)
Queensland, Australia. A coastal supermarket hold up turns deadly when the robber shoots one of the customers dead, but that becomes the least of their worries. An earthquake happens which results in a tsunami, flooding the area and market - the grocery store is below sea level. Surviving the disaster gets a lot worse, it’s discovered that a great white shark is now lurking in the submerged market, swimming between the isles - hungry. The other problem is that murderer is still in the store, he had his face covered during the robbery, he could be anyone of the survivors. This is bloody and at times quite creative flick.
    Anchor Bay Entertainment - 2012 - NR

    "Dance Of The Dead" (2008)
So many movies claim to be the next “Shaun Of The Dead” (2004), 98% of them is crap; lame humor with so-so effects and a flimsy story. This is one of the exception. Prom night. A radiation leak from a nearby nuclear plant has seeped into the local cemetery causing the dead to rise, hungry. The only thing that stands in the way of a pandemic are the geeks, nerds and assorted losers who couldn't get dates. I can't not praise this enough. Great fun and played smart.
    Lions Gate Film Inc. - 2008 - R

    "Haunter" (2013)
An original take on the haunted house genre. The year is 1985; teenager Lisa Johnson suspects her home is haunted after experiencing odd occurrences. Scared at first, but her inquisitive nature takes over and uncovers multi-layers of ghosts; each unaware of the other. As well as a sinister presence who keeps them locked in the house; feeding off their torment and suffering. Things escalate once she makes contact with Olivia, who desperately needs her help - communication that makes her a target of the Dark Man. Lisa's only hope is to unify the dead to take down the malevolence. Spoiled it? No, I haven't; not by a long shot. *wicked smile*
    MPI Media Group - 2014 - NR

    "Splinter" (2008)
A couple on their drive to a camping site get car jacked while helping a stranded motorist (and his girlfriend). They find an abomination in the woods and become trapped in a convenience store. What is it? One of the most original fiends in a long time. They look like spines, black thick toothpicks. They have limited motion, but once inside you - it infects and kill. Now dead, they take you over, you're the engine and structure. Like Lego body parts; limbs can be severed and reattached in different places, functional. Lots of WTF moments.
    Magnolia Home Entertainment - 2009 - R

Shaken? No? Well then, come back here on October 22nd, 2015 for a ghastly two parter on how one might cheat death. But Mr. Bones does not take kindly to meddling teens.

Past Tense - Dance With The Reaper Part II

    Footnotes.

There was another bonus disc, not a store exclusive, available to all retailers. I bought mine at Best Buy on release day for $14.99 (price varied from store to store).

Released three weeks before FD3 hit theaters was a three disc set, "Final Destination: Scared 2 Death Pack" on January 17th, 2006.

Just a bundling of the first two movies (in their own cases) with a cardboard slipcover.

Inside the cover was an extra DVD and a theater voucher to see FD3 for free ($10.50 value for one; the window was February 10th to March 10th, 2006). Never used mine, its still in there.

    What can I say? I'm a collector.

The bonus disc came in a printed cardboard sleeve. It should be noted, the re-release pack...

When "Final Destination" and "Final Destination 2" originally came out, both DVD had holographic, foil wraparounds - only available on their first pressings. "Scared 2 Death Pack" has the later wraparounds, flat printings. I sold my extra copies and moved my first editions into that slipcover.

The bonus disc has a runtime of 38:04 minutes. Since it will fall out of the slipcover. I have my extra disc (and sleeve) inside the Wal-Mart bonus case, now upgraded into a two disc case. *nods* As you can see the content is kinda weak, but it does have the teaser for the FD3 and behind-the-scenes footage.

    Say thank you.

    Say it!

The flow chart for "Choose Their Fate!".

If you didn't know, the home video release is quite unique. You have the option, to turn this movie into a 'choose your adventure' tale. Some of it was lame, others were quite shiny.

    Enjoy...

    Coin Flip
Heads: Theatrical version. Tails: Wendy has her vision while in line not inside the coaster, the movie ends. Epilogue before end credits on the characters post-graduation.
    73 or 76 Degrees
73 Degrees: Theatrical version. 76 Degrees: Both Ashley (Chelan Simmons) and Ashlyn (Crystal Lowe) still die in the tanning salon, but not by burning alive; electrocution.
    Should Wendy Honk Again?
Yes: Kevin pulls Frankie (Sam Easton) out of the car at the last moment. No: Theatrical version.
    Should Wendy Take Another Look?
Yes: Lewis (Texas Battle) dies immediately by the machine. No: Theatrical version.
    Kill or Warning Shot?
Kill: Theatrical version. Warning Shot: Erin (Alexz Johnson) dies the same way, but different cause.
    Was Frankie Worth Saving?
Yes: See a pervy video shot by Mr. Frankie Cheeks. No: Movie continues.
    Jump Left or Jump Right
Jump Left: Theatrical version. Jump Right: Ian (Kris Lemche) still dies from the malfunctioning cherry picker, but more mercifully. The movie ends.
    Map or No Map?
This option only is available depending on the last choice (Jump Left). Map: Alternate ending; Wendy does not having her final premonition. No Map: Theatrical version.
    Get The Details?
This option only is available depending on the last choice (Map). Yes: Read the newspaper article on deaths Kimberly Corman (A.J. Cook) and Officer Thomas Burke (Michael Landes) from "Final Destination 2". No: Movie continues - alternate ending.

When FD3 came to home video; "Choose Their Fate" option didn't work on all DVD players - Toshiba brand machines had the worst errors - would freeze up and jump. Sony machines don't have this problem.

    - - - - - - - - - -

    Tangent.

    Say thank you again!

As you read above, there was an option to read the obituaries for the two surviving characters from FD2. I'm kinda bummed out that Kimberly and Thomas didn't become a couple. But I guess after the exploding barbecue death, they figured it was safer to stay apart. That article was excellent.

Great nod to the events of the previous film.

By the way, Kimberly and Officer Burke were suppose to have cameo at the end of FD3. The couple was on board the subway with Wendy, Julie (Amanda Crew) and Kevin; realizing far too late what was about to happen.

Would've like to have seen that, but the actors' schedule prevented that from happening. Damn.

    - - -

Here's another one, but from "Final Destination 2". Some people apparently missed the death of Alex Browning (Devon Sawa), FD1. It's mentioned twice in the film.

First when Kimberly searches online for the fate of the survivors of Flight 108. The second pix is expanded, reconstructed screen snaps. You're welcome. Then when Clear Rivers (Ali Larter) shows Kimberly the Polaroid of her dead friend.

    Gravity and a brick.

    Recommendations.

The last offering for this season. The next PT arrives two days before Halloween; you should have your night viewing down.

    "Below" (2002)
World War II. The U.S.S. Tiger Shark picks up the survivors of a torpedoed medical vessel. Shortly there after bizarre occurrences happen in the submarine. Something is inside the ship, looking for vengeance. Now the crew must not only deal with enemy destroyers above, but an angry... ghost. The studio barely promoted this movie. In fact the director, David Twohy paid from his own pocket, the film's website (long dead). That's messed up, it deserved much better. Damn good feature.
    Dimension Home Video - 2002 - R

    "Doghouse" (2009)
A U.K. feature and worthy to be spoken in the same breath as "Shaun Of The Dead" (2004). It's a guys' weekend, a group of friends try to help out one of their own who has fallen into depression over his bad divorce. They take him to a remote village where the women greatly out number the men; time to party. But when they arrive they find it deserted. Where is everyone? It's a take on "28 Days Later" (2002), a rage virus - but it only effects women. Turning them into man hating homicidals. Now the group is trapped and separated within the local shops. No communication, they're on their own. A dark comedy.
    MPI Media Group - 2010 - NR

    "Feast" (2005)
An out of the way desert bar becomes an all night siege when a bloody man enters the tavern claiming that large unknown beasts are coming this way in mire minutes. He's discounted - for a moment until THEY arrive. This is a remorseless horror flick, nobody is safe. What are they? No answer given, don’t need it. Big, nasty, over-the-top and ooh so mean. The movie plays like a video game, in the good sense. This spawn two sequels; note, Part III comes in two versions, R and Unrated.
    Dimension Home Entertainment - 2009 - NR

    "Love Object" (2003)
Kenneth Winslow is shy and socially awkward, he works as a technical writer (users manuals). His life becomes complicated when a new employee is hired, Lisa. She becomes his obsession, knowing that he can’t have her, he settles on the next best thing - a love doll, custom made to order in her likeness, Nikki. Kenneth soon has reality issues (is Nikki alive?) and decided to remove the real girl for his silicone lover.
    Lions Gate Home Entertainment - 2004 - R

    "Rogue" (2007)
American travel journalist, Pete McKell joins a group of tourists on a crocodile cruise in Australia. Their tour guide investigate a possible distress up the river, a flare. What they find is an empty, partially submerged boat. Soon their own craft is impacted by an unseen force, it too begins to sink. The group swims to a nearby isle. As they try to understand what happened, it becomes violently apparent as one of their own is consumed by a twenty-five foot long crocodile. To make matters even worse, their sanctuary is shrinking; the tide is rising, in a few hours they’ll be underwater.
    Genius Products - 2008 - NR

Signs point to the conclusion of Limited Edition Horror with another two parter - about a super mega monkey. Don't be frightened on October 29th, 2015. Probably not that accurate - throwing his dung... mostly.
