    Past Tense

[An earlier version of this PT was originally posted on May 1st, 2014 on JoBlo's "DVD, Blu-Ray & Home Theater Discussion" forum.]

Fear, love and scalpels in Seattle with "Grey's Anatomy"...

"Grey's Anatomy: Season Three - Seriously Extended" was released on home video on September 11th, 2007.

It streeted against "The Graduate: 40th Anniversary Edition", "DOA: Dead Or Alive" and "Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee".

This release originally came with an embossed cardboard foil slipcase holding seven discs in a digipak. It came with three inserts. 1) Six page booklet - episode guide (without air dates) and special features listing. 2) Rebate instructions from TVonDVDoffer.com; save $10.00 (on two), $20.00 (on three) or $30.00 (on four) on Buena Vista Home Entertainment television sets. Shows shown: "Ugly Betty", "Desperate Housewives", "Grey's Anatomy", "Brothers And Sisters" and "What About Brian". The offer was valid from August 21st, 2007 to October 31st of that year. Details for the rebate was not on the insert, you had to get that from the web address. 3) A folded booklet for "Grey's Anatomy" merchandise; CD soundtrack, trivia board game and official magazine. Plus ads for other Buena Vista Home Entertainment season sets and an ad for abc.com.

On street, Best Buy offered the sole exclusive, a bonus disc. The set sold for $36.99 - a minimum of thirty copies per stores.

The DVD has a run time of 14:41 minutes and came in a printed sleeve, shrink wrapped on the box's back - the sleeve's rear mimics the slipcase's back.

Got curious, looked; Target sold the regular edition for the same price on release week. I bought my copy on the day at Best Buy, didn't have a problem finding one, sway.

Did some further digging; Circuit City had their own offer - save $10.00 with purchase of "Grey's Anatomy" S3 and any iTunes cards. They sold season three on street for $34.99.

    Void.

Another short entry. Time for filler again!

I'm going to talk about the former ABC TV series - "Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea".

For post Gen-Xers this 1964 show (based on the theatrical movie of the same name [1961]) is about a hi-tech nuclear research submarine, the SSRN Seaview. Man, that sub was a thing of beauty, second only to Captain Nemo's Nautilus from "20,000 Leagues Under The Sea" (1954), above.

The ship was commanded Admiral Harriman Nelson (Richard Basehart), who designed the craft. Each week the crew would find themselves in various adventures around the globe.

It's remembered for poorly scripted teleplays (with little scientific accuracy), ridicules sci-fi plots and some pretty hammy acting (especially from Basehart) - "Star Trek" this is not. But even with all those negatives it still has charm. Plus the kickass submarine which later got a flying sub shuttle for season two, both inspired by the shape of a manta ray.

Here's the submarine in all her glory. Damn sexxxy. *rubs nipples* Let me take a step back.

Season one was black and white; action adventure/drama with political intrigue. It's the best of the seasons. What happened is they started looking at demographics and saw that a good portion of their viewers were children - knowing that, they altered its course and became the crapfest that we now know (as in catering to little kids).

    Where am I going?

On February 20th, 2007, I picked up Season Two, Volume Two from Best Buy. Yes, I'm that anal. Man, I hate doubled sided discs. Every season volume has scratched DVDs, EVERY. *deep sigh* I digress. Anyhow, these are episodes I have not seen since I was little - when there were in syndication in the late 1970s. The episode was "Graveyard Of Fear" originally aired - January 30th, 1966.

WTF? This shot is in the episode for slightly over a second.

You can actually see the diver push the SeaView model through the water. I wanna believe this was just poor editing. There is no good reason for this hand to be there. Did they even care?

Plot? A massive portuguese man-of-war (jellyfish) is preventing the sub to reach its target, a sunken research vessel. What's in it? An immortality formula. It starred Robert Loggia as Dr. Crandall Ames.

Well at least is not about aliens disguised wind-up toys taking over the ship. Yes. Yes, you read correctly. "The Terrible Toys" from October 16th, 1966. *shakes head*

The show was created by Irwin Allen - notoriously cheap (recycle tons of props, sets and tacky wind-ups). He would have a big budget first episode and the rest... well you get the idea. He reinvent himself as the king of disaster movies. You can read about his films in the Past Tense entry for "2012"; Part I.

All and all, this ran for four seasons; entire series is on DVD...

The cover for season one, volume one should be a poster. Damn good picture. Season one, volume two isn't bad either. The rest? Insert your Photoshop comments...

Found out something while researching; in the U.K. the show was given a box set (region 2), "Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea: The Complete Collection - Limited Edition Collector' Set"; streeted on March 26th, 2012. It's a repackaging of their normal seasons (they got full season releases, not volumes), the only new item is a booklet "charting the history of the series". It sold for £89.99, a thirty-one disc set.

The math; eight volume release (U.S.), three discs each, all double sided - that's forty-eight single sided DVDs. So the U.K. release has less numbers and higher compression to fit more episodes into thirty-one discs. But you get a booklet. I'll be honest, would like that booklet; slip that inside the final volume (if it could fit).

It's an entertaining show. Hey, it is what it is. And Katherine Heigl is kinda a bitch (in real life).

There you go folks, a shorter than usual Past Tense - it happens. The next installment surfaces on March 7th, 2019. Don't forget to dodge sinking ice. *nods*

[An earlier version of this PT was originally posted on December 12th, 2013 on JoBlo's "DVD, Blu-Ray & Home Theater Discussion" forum.]

This outing we encounter real magik and the land of enchantment in "Once Upon A Time"...

"Once Upon A Time: The Complete First Season" was released on home video on August 28th, 2012.

It streeted against "The Pirates! Band Of Misfits", "Boardwalk Empire: The Complete Second Season" and "Jersey Shore Shark Attack".

This release originally came with an embossed cardboard foil slipcover (more on it further down). The single folded (smaller sized) insert was an advertisement for ABC series on DVD/Blu-Ray along with a $10.00 off coupon. When did it expire? Can't say, I used mine to purchase "The River: The Complete First Season" (a.k.a. the 'complete series'). Bought from Target for five bucks. The insert included ads for four novels from author Richard Castle and the ABC Family series, "Switched At Birth". As well as "Once Upon A Time" hardback book, a collection of fairy tales that inspired the show (illustrated by Kevin Tong).

The DVD case is transparent - underneath is the episode listing per disc and special features. But NO air dates? Why is that so hard to do?

    - - -

Target offered a bonus disc with exclusive slipcover. This sold for $34.99 and was also available for Blu-Ray for $44.99.

The bonus disc came under the slipcover inside a printed cardboard sleeve, fancy. The extra disc is "Inside Media @ The Paley Center For Media: Once Upon A Time" (March 4th, 2012), a DVD. The program is moderated by Matt Mitovich from TVLine dot com.

Guests include stars Ginnifer Goodwin, Josh Dallas, Robert Carlyle, Jennifer Morrison, Lana Parrilla and Raphael Sbarge. Along with series creators, Adam Horowitz, Edward Kitsis and executive producer Steve Pearlman. It has a run time of 30:02 minutes (with seven chapters - rare, most bonus programs have none).

There is no menu screen, it just plays.

Should be noted that this is abbreviated - the full program "Once Upon A Time: Cast & Creators Live At Paleyfest 2012" is 58 minutes. And can be bought for $14.99 an M.O.D. from April 12th, 2013; an official DVD-R sold from Amazon.

It didn't hit me until it was talked about at the panel; Jennifer Morrison was on another series, Fox's former show, "House M.D." as Dr. Allison Cameron. didn't recognize her.

    I like this quote...

We would love to tell the story of "The Little Mermaid" and Ariel and for us it was more of a season two thing. We just have a lot of story with the people on the stage that needs to be told first. And you know, we have a lot of toys in the toy box - we just haven't got to yet.
    - Edward Kitsis

This wouldn't happen until the current season, three - played by JoAnna Garcia Swisher. I remember her best as Sandy Sue, the tourette's cheerleader from "Not Another Teen Movie" (2001). God, that was funny and so inappropriate.

By the way, Kitsis and Horowitz were the screenwriters on "Tron Legacy" (2010) and writers on another ABC hit series, "Lost" (in fact both men were co-executive producer as well). The same situation/positions on the short lived, animated prequel, "Tron: Uprising" (2012). Man, that needs to come on DVD. There is no home video released on the horizon. It's like "Uprising" is the bastard child at Disney.

Back on topic; this wasn't the first series exclusive, there was another...

On February 14th, 2012 for $9.99, Target offered an exclusive single disc (DVD) with case, "Once Upon A Time: Chapter I - The First Five Episode". In short this is Disc 1 from the later season set; same extras as Disc 1 and the menu screen also reads "Disc 1".

Commentary by Kitsis and Horowitz (on pilot) and "Once Upon A Time: Orchestral Suite" music from composer Mark Isham.

Also present was a coupon for $5.00 off (DVD or Blu-Ray) - the later full season one release.

I did not bought this. In fact, never saw the show until on home video. Season one was a blind buy based on lots of positive feedback. Taking it a step further, I didn't see the show until months after I bought season two (another blind buy). *shrugs* It wasn't high on my priority. It is now.

Should be noted that FYE/Suncoast had a minor exclusive of their own too. A free poster with purchase. Sorry, do not know the price tag. What did it look like? Take the Target image above; minus the stickers, the text "Chapter 1: The First Five Episodes" and ABC logo on the bottom. That's it. How big?

Sorry, I'm in the dark on that too.

    - - -

Season one's wraparound is different from the normal slipcover. On the slip, you got the other land (above left). And on the case you got the town, Storybrooke - with the main characters' alter egos; minus Emma (Jennifer Morrison) who's the same for the obvious reason. Sway.

    - - - - - - - - - -

    Just Because.

There are not many... mature women I'm into. But Lana Parrilla is one of them. I do not care for her as the Evil Queen; not my thing, though I'm sure there are diehard cosplay enthusiasts who are turned on by the attire. But I do enjoy her as mayor Regina Mills. It's like the producers are looking for any excuse to showcase her ample chest. I'm not the only one who's noticed. Boobs!

Bad girls do have more fun. *nods*

Interesting, Parrilla had a regular role on the former CBS series, "Swingtown" (2008) as Trina Decker, lasted 13 episodes.

Very recommended, few people know it - deserves better. The year is 1976; we follow group of friends who explore their sexuality together (open marriages/relationships and their consequences). It also stars Molly Parker, I like her.

She likes them nice and young. She likes them fresh and hungry - with fire in her eyes, let you you try her on for size. Show you a trick or two to teach you something new; full of Bacardi and botox, she's 40 and so hot.
    - Hedley

Since I brought it up, mature ladies. Mature ladies I like: Diane Lane, Winona Ryder, Krista Allen, Ali Larter, Carmen Electra, Michelle Monaghan and Amy Acker.

By the way, Goodwin is a mom today. Who's the father? Why her Prince Charming, co-star Josh Dallas. That's sweet.

There you have it. More magic to be had on March 21st, 2019... season two. Come back and dust your buttons.

Now with magik in the real world - we face the consequences in "Once Upon A Time"...

"Once Upon A Time: The Complete Second Season" was released on home video on August 13th, 2013.

It streeted against "Olympus Has Fallen", "The Company You Keep" and "The Big Wedding".

This release originally came with an embossed cardboard foil slipcover - it was different from the DVD wraparound; more on it further down. There was no insert. The DVD case is transparent - underneath is the episode listing per disc and special features. Still no printed air dates. *sigh*

    - - -

There was only one store exclusive - from Best Buy. A bonus disc (DVD). This sold for $34.99 and was also available for Blu-Ray (with slipcover) for $44.99.

The bonus disc came under the slipcover inside a printed cardboard sleeve.

It holds one featurette and three deleted scenes (which was cool, since it explained what happened to King George/Albert Spencer [Alan Dale]).

The run time of 19:39 minutes.

    - - -

Above is the DVD's wraparound cover, showcasing Killian Jones' ship, the Jolly Rodger docked at Storybrooke.

    - - -

While not included anywhere on season two release nor exclusive, there was another Paley event for the show. It happened on March 3rd, 2013, "Once Upon A Time: Cast And Creators Live At Paleyfest 2013".

The season two panel can be bought - an official DVD-R, sold from Amazon for $14.99, streeted on September 25th, 2013.

This is 56 minutes long. As with season one's Paley event, this is moderated by Matt Mitovich from TVLine dot com. Guests include stars Jennifer Morrison, Ginnifer Goodwin, Lana Parrilla, Robert Carlyle, Emilie de Ravin, Colin O'Donoghue and Josh Dallas. Along with series creators, Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis.

    - - - - - - - - - -

    Tangent.

Actress Meghan Ory plays Ruby/Red Riding Hood. Quite the hottie. When I saw her, I was trying to figure out where I had seen the Canadian actress before, ended up going to IMDb.

Then found it. She did a low budget (not an insult) sci-fi/horror flick, "Decoys" (2004).

She played Alex, the gal pal and would be love interest to our main character, Luke (Corey Sevier).

Think of this as a variant of "Species" (1995) with a nice twist ending; the aliens (occupying a college campus' popular sorority) are already here and trying to reproduce and failing - leaving behind a trail of bloody male corpses.

It follows Luke uncovering the interstellar plot and trying to save his friend/roommate, Roger (Elias Toufexis) - he's dating one of the invaders. It's a decent flick and co-stars Nicole Eggert as Detective Amanda Watts. Man, she's real tiny, forgot about that; her "Baywatch" days.

Also stars Kim Poirier (as Constance), I remember her best as Monica from the remake of "Dawn Of The Dead" (2004). She was Steve's... fu¢k buddy? By the way, her character wasn't named in the movie. We have "Monica" from her listing in the end credits.

Anyhow, it spawned one direct to video sequel, "Decoys 2: Alien Seduction" (2007). The only returning cast was Sevier and Poirier. It's too bad Ory didn't return, her character's fate was left up in the air. *wink*

Both flicks are pretty good and I would recommend, you could watch far worse. *nods*

    Point? Miss Ory is pretty.

Researching the post, uncovered something. The U.S. release of "Decoys" was from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment (September 7th, 2004), two extras; behind-the-scenes featurette and deleted scenes. I own this. But the native Canadian DVD from Lions Gate (June 7th, 2005); above right (Poirier on the cover) has more content - bloopers and the film's trailer.

Same deal, the Canadian release for the sequel has extras, the American release is bare bones.

I would like to see another installment, but for now, two movies is what we get.

My first exposure to "Decoys" was from Wal-Mart, they had one of the coitus scenes playing on the multi-TVs in the electronics department. Yeah, that was a questionable decision. Got curious and ended up picking up the DVD.

    Sex sells. *nods*

Yup this is a short entry. Come back here on April 4th, 2019 for a brand new entry! Times two. That is - in the same post.

    Past Tense

A brand new entry! Havent had one since January.

This week we get all sassy, times two with a mediator that's "Fairly Legal"....

"Fairly Legal: Season One" was released on home video on March 13th, 2012.

It streeted against "The Three Musketeers" (2011), "The Adventures Of Tintin", "The Killing: The Complete First Season" and "My Week With Marilyn" (previous PT; click here).

Originally came with an non-embossed cardboard slipcase holding three discs in transparent DVD case. Wraparound is double sided; inside, the episode guide and bonuses are listed - no air dates. There were two inserts; 1) Ad for season two of FL with the same photo as the DVD cover. The other side is an ad for another USA Channel series; "In Plain Sight" their then upcoming season five. 2) A tiny ad for various titles which have UltraViolent digital streaming copies. This is odd since this show didn't come with a digital copy. The other side, an ad celebrating "100 Years Of Universal" Studios.

Doing two exclusives this week - both for the same series which is truly Past Tense as both sets are now in general release.

So why am I doing this write up? I'm a fan and hope that this post will give folks curiosity to seek out this show, become fans too.

    - - -

This was a limited store exclusive from Target, sold for $25.00 on street. And was a blind buy for me, don't have cable. Bought on release date, no buyer's remorse.

The mirrored slipcover (same pixs as wraparound) has a red sticker on it which read "Only @ Target".

This was given a wide release on June 5th, 2012. And can be found on Amazon for less than five bucks.

So Target had it for roughly three months as their exclusive.

    Notes.

Season one was ten episodes long and the DVD set has various extras.

I'm pretty sure a lot are in the dark.

This follows the exploits of Kate Reed (Sarah Shahi) who decided to switch profession in San Francisco. No longer wanting to work as a lawyer, too many bad clients.

She moved back to her father's law firm, "Reed & Reed" which is focused on meditation to her delight.

It begins with Kate's father dead. She didn't inherit the business, her stepmother Lauren (Virginia Williams) did. Giving the impression that mommy 2.0 was a gold digger.

There is a push/pull from the city's new Assistant District Attorney, Justin Patrick (Michael Trucco) which is Kate's ex-husband.

Rounding out the main cast is Leonardo "Leo" Prince (Baron Vaughn) who is Kate's assistant at the firm. By the way, Lauren is Kate's age.

Anyhow Leo's main job beyond helping with various infos is keeping his boss out of trouble. She can be quite self-destructive at times which could very well be the reason why her father didn't give the firm to her.

Shahi is so adorable and likable in the role. Funny and witty which reflects the actress' personality. She's a fun gal, you can see this in the various interviews she has given over the years. Meaning she's basically playing herself.

Series felt like a re-imagining of "Moonlighting" (1985; ABC) - that's a great compliment; entire run is on DVD, five seasons. Yes, that's a young Bruce Willis (with hair) and co-star Cybill Shepherd.

It straddled between comedy and drama quite well. Both shows were irreverent and at times bizarre. The main episode story/mystery takes a back seat to the characters' banter. Each week Kate and company would get a case which required her to unravel like that detective agency ("Moonlighting"). The trail goes into odd places.

She's holding diamonds in her hands in that pix, Shepherd. And that watch in his hand.

"Fairly Legal: Season Two" was released on home video on April 9th, 2013.

It streeted against "Hyde Park On Hudson", "BBC Earth: Great Barrier Reef", "Boss: Season Two" and "The Sorcerer And The White Snake".

Same deal as season one, transparent case and slipcase; another three disc release. This time there was one tiny, single sided insert for "Necessary Roughness" their then upcoming third season on USA Channel.

Like the above, this was a limited Target exclusive store; sold on street for $19.99. You could save five dollars if bought on the same receipt if you took home this and "Necessary Roughness" season two DVDs. Both were Target exclusives.

Same deal with the slipcover on two; red "Only @ Target" sticker too.

This was given a wide release on June 11th, 2013. And can be found on Amazon for about eight bucks.

Target had it for roughly two months as their exclusive.

    Notes.

Season two was thirteen episodes long and the DVD set has few extras, mostly deleted scenes.

You know the deal now. Sway.

Season two has a forced partner for Kate, Ben Grogan (Ryan Johnson) - done for more business and to keep Kate more in check.

He was a former ambulance chaser, the worst kind of lawyer. Add to that, loves money and wants a much of it as possible. All the things that Kate hates. In the business for the wrong reasons.

You get more of the same with Grogan stirring the pot. And that's it - was axed due to poor ratings which is a shame; great chemistry and off tilter stories. Should've been at least five seasons.

There is something you need to know - opening credits has been altered for home video. The tune "The Yellow Brick Road Song" by Iyeoka Okoawo was taken off due to licensing. Universal wouldn't pay for the rights.

I saw Shahi in a pervious series. No, not the "The L Word" (Showtime as Carmen de la Pica Morales), though I need to check that out, all seasons on DVD. No, I'm talking about the two season NBC program "Life" (2007).

She played Dani Reese, a recovering drug addict/alcoholic; police detective get partnered with fellow who had gone to prison and was exonerated for his crime... Charlie Crews (Damian Lewis) sued the county for the rail roading he received and won; wrongly imprisoned for twelve years. Now has money, but lots of free time. Forced his hand to be reinstated as an L.A. police detective once more.

This was a serious show, centered on the mystery - why Crews was framed? There is a resolution in the series finale, finding the real killer. But left wiggle room for a third season which never came. Both seasons are on DVD. "Life" should've gone for a few more years.

Seasons one is eleven, due to the then writer's strike of 2007. Season two is twenty-one episodes.

    Okay. I should - "Moonlighting"...

Returning home from a long cruise, wealthy, former international super model, Madeline Hayes discovers her accountant embezzled millions - imminent bankruptcy. Liquid assets gone, she still owns some businesses: dog groomers, nail salon, portrait studio, bait & tackle shop, adult book store and a detective agency. Bad news since all were kept as tax write offs. Hayes goes to each, informs her employees, close shop - businesses are for sale.

Doing the same to City Of Angels Investigations is greeted by lead investigator David Addison who tires to persuades her to keep shop. Fails. The business is the isle of lost toys; people couldn't make it anywhere else - work here.

Making a final attempt, Addison trails Hayes on a dinner date. She is adamant; arguing with David near the restaurant's glass elevator an ill looking vagrant appears - accosts Madeline and pulls a watch from his mouth, forcibly puts it on her wrist then dies at her feet, knife in the back.

Reluctantly Madeline is in need of David's help as bodies starts piling; the two find themselves knee deep in a mystery involving a broken watch, Nazis and four million in stolen diamonds. Solved, David announces on live TV (news covering the diamonds) that Madeline is keeping the agency - to save face, she angrily agrees... for one week. No clients, plug pulled.

    They got clients.

Should be noted, "Moonlighting" ranks high among the list of worst series finale in television history. Yes, it is that bad. They had no idea how to end it. Seasons one and two, fried gold. Season three, good. Season four, okay. Season five... well it had some decent episodes. That's sound bad, but when it was good, it was damn good.

"Fair Legal" was a great show, funny and entertaining. Do seek it out - can be taken home cheaply. Come back here on April 18th, 2019 for a slice of magical pie with crime solving.
