Didn't knew about abandonware before (or not remember now).
I think that JPB is right but maybe there are DOS (or other platforms) emulators available somewhere, the only thing is that I hope to find it for Linux...

I use a Program called DOSBox (An open source DOS emulator for BeOS, Linux, Mac OS X, OS/2, and Windows) to run all old games. It's really easy to use, drag and drop the .EXE of the game onto it and it'll run automatically. Also it can be used like traditonal DOS with all the old commands if you can remember them

I've been using the Abadoina website as well for the last 3 or so years. There are some classic titles on there so it's well worth a look.
I'm a big fan of the old point and click adventures and they just don't make them anymore. Games like Gabriel Knight, Darkseed series, Lure of the Temptress, Beneath a Steel Sky, Monkey Island series, The Dig, King's Quest series, Full Throttle, Discworld and Grim Fandango.
